If you generate Vitamin D by being exposed to sunlight, then it makes sense that if you block those sun rays that you may not be making enough Vitamin D.
On the NY Times website, C. CLAIBORNE RAY, has written an article about this very topic. The article explains that you may in fact be blocking the UV rays that generate Vitamin D, but these harmful rays contribute to skin cancer and premature aging. But, one can get Vitamin D from eating foods like fatty fish and vitamin fortified milk and taking Vitamin D supplements!

If you know any woman currently undergoing chemotherapy, please pass the word to her that there is a cleaning service that provides FREE housecleaning – once per month for 4 months while she is in treatment.
All she has to do is sign up and have her doctor fax a note confirming the treatment. Cleaning for a Reason will have a participating maid service in her zip code area arrange for the service. This organization serves the entire USA and currently has 547 partners to help these women. It’s our job to pass the word and let them know that there are people out there that care. Be a blessing to someone and pass this information along.

According to a blog post at Science Daily a new twin study showed that eating a Mediterranean Style Diet may improve heart function. That’s good news! I love eating Mediterranean style foods.
When I was teenager, my mom had her first skin cancer. That’s when I began to take an interest in prevention. So for all of my adult life, I have been careful to observe safety tips. I’m the odd ball at the beach who hangs out early morning or early evening and NOT during mid-day.
My mom has had many battles with skin cancer including a partial nose replacement. She said she used to BAKE in the sun as a teenager. I’m thankful I could learn from her and have not had any skin cancer, but I am sad that others will suffer from this easily prevented disease.
I would like to add that one should not put too much confidence in sunscreen. You can still get burned! Read and follow directions carefully. Limited time in the sun is best.
But, there are some positives to sun exposure. We get our Vitamin D from the sun. I prefer to get mine from food supplements rather than risk it.
I recommend you read the following article by Edward Geehr, M.D., LifeScript’s Medical officer where he offers tips for preparing for the summer sun and reducing risk of skin cancer. Please protect yourself and your children from the harmful effects of the sun.
I just never dreamed I would try this, but since we’ve been adding more fresh, local vegetables to our dietswe needed an idea for turnips. Frank Mason of the Bluebird Market suggested we try Turnip Fries. Since my husband (AKA Pizza Doctor) is the main cook in our home, he got the recipe and tried it out. I was skeptical, but once I tried them…I was impressed.
We recently had a “Fresh and Local” dinner party and served them.
Pizza Doctor’s Recipe for Turnip Fries
Turnip Fries are doctored up from potatoes for a healthy alternative by the Pizza Doctor.
4 turnip roots, cut into strips (skins on)
2 tbs extra virgin olive oil
seasoning (chipotle powder, paprika, pepper, and sea salt)
Wash turnips well. Slice and then cut slices into thin strips in the manner of a French Fried potato. Toss in extra virgin olive oil and sprinkle with sea salt and pepper and other seasonings of choice. Pan sear and gently stir fry over medium heat until the turnip is cooked through and soft. If you would like turnip fries crispy on the outside, just before removing from the pan, turn up the heat and stir as they brown. Season with your favorite seasonings. Optional: Serve with Crystal hot sauce or Heinz Ketchup.
Turnips are a “starch” vegetable, but provide only one third the amount of calories as
an equal amount of potatoes. Turnips provide an excellent source of vitamin C, fiber,
folic acid, manganese, pantothenic acid, and copper.
