Drinking Coffee May Reduce The Risk Of Diabetes
| June 13, 2010 | Posted by admin under Nutrition |

Now this is a study I’ve been waiting for, an excuse to drink coffee. For years, I denied myself caffeine due to all the negative studies that I read about it hurting your immune system, blah, blah, blah. Then new studies started springing up and I allowed myself to start drinking coffee and green tea. Now there are more and more studies proving it is good for you.
Medical News Today reports, “The scientists fed either water or coffee to a group of laboratory mice commonly used to study diabetes. Coffee consumption prevented the development of high-blood sugar and also improved insulin sensitivity in the mice, thereby reducing the risk of diabetes.”
Before you go out and order a latte and celebrate, remember the mice probably didn’t have cream and sugar. Now that’s another study for which we will have to wait.

Tired of Achy Joints? Try Glucosamine and Cat’s Claw
| June 12, 2010 | Posted by admin under Supplements |
The Shaklee Difference™ by Shaklee Corporation
How can one make an informed choice in today’s market place? Rely on Shaklee. In the case of Joint Health Complex*, we don’t just add glucosamine because consumers are aware of the importance of this key ingredient. We formulate the supplement to provide the level of glucosamine that has been shown in peer-reviewed, independent studies to provide benefit.
While many of the most popular glucosamine supplements provide 1,000 milligrams or less, Shaklee Joint Health Complex* provides 1,500 milligrams—an amount shown by scientific data to provide optimal benefit.
But we didn’t stop there. The most common form of glucosamine used in glucosamine supplements is sulfate, but sulfate contains sodium—up to 30% by volume. In order to make Joint Health Complex* the best supplement for everyone, including those who must avoid or reduce sodium intake, we use sodium-free and scientifically substantiated glucosamine hydrochloride. Our scientists also incorporated a beneficial amount of Cat’s Claw, because sound studies show that it promotes joint comfort.*
Many other joint health supplements tout the addition of chondroitin in their supplements. While this compound has been widely studied, after rigorous analysis of studies involving chondroitin, Shaklee and other scientists consider it an unnecessary ingredient because the jury is still out on its effectiveness. Many experts agree that the uncertain science on chondroitin may be due to the fact that oral intakes of this compound are mostly destroyed in the stomach before it can be usefully absorbed.
Always look closely at competitor labels. You will see the Shaklee Difference.
* Helps build cartilage to facilitate range of motion and movement*
* Supports joint function and flexibility*
* Uses clinically proven cat’s claw in combination with glucosamine to promote joint health*
* Improves cushioning in joints*
* Gluten free
* Easy-open, flip-top cap

Is the food you’re buying designed to kill you and your family?
| June 10, 2010 | Posted by admin under Nutrition |
Today I read an interesting article over at Nutrition Research Center.org that made a good point. If you go to the garden center Home Depot and browse the pesticide aisle, you will find warnings on the labels about the dangers to your health. But, when you go to the grocery store and buy produce that has been sprayed with all these same pesticides, there is no warning. Interesting….
Anyway, it is important for us to be careful about the produce we are consuming. We are excited to have a local CSA that shops at our local farms for us and delivers a box of a variety of organically grown each week. We know what practices our local farmers are using and it makes us feel good about feeding our family healthy pesticide free produce. Find a local CSA in your area and support your local farmers.

Teen Headaches Tied to Alcohol and Coffee

I was reading an interesting article at Big Health Tree about teen headaches and a study that linked them to consumption of alcohol and coffee. It is sad that so many teens are being treated with drugs for migraines instead of looking at simple solutions such as diet and exercise.
I really like this blog, Big Health Tree because it covers a wide range of health topics in an easy to navigate website.
