How to Make Healthy French Fries Using Turnips
| January 17, 2010 | Posted by admin under Children's Health, Exercise, Natural Cleaning Products, Nutrition, Recipes, Stress Relief, Supplements, Uncategorized |
I just never dreamed I would try this, but since we’ve been adding more fresh, local vegetables to our dietswe needed an idea for turnips. Frank Mason of the Bluebird Market suggested we try Turnip Fries. Since my husband (AKA Pizza Doctor) is the main cook in our home, he got the recipe and tried it out. I was skeptical, but once I tried them…I was impressed.
We recently had a “Fresh and Local” dinner party and served them.
Pizza Doctor’s Recipe for Turnip Fries
Turnip Fries are doctored up from potatoes for a healthy alternative by the Pizza Doctor.

4 turnip roots, cut into strips (skins on)
2 tbs extra virgin olive oil
seasoning (chipotle powder, paprika, pepper, and sea salt)
Wash turnips well. Slice and then cut slices into thin strips in the manner of a French Fried potato. Toss in extra virgin olive oil and sprinkle with sea salt and pepper and other seasonings of choice. Pan sear and gently stir fry over medium heat until the turnip is cooked through and soft. If you would like turnip fries crispy on the outside, just before removing from the pan, turn up the heat and stir as they brown. Season with your favorite seasonings. Optional: Serve with Crystal hot sauce or Heinz Ketchup.
Health Benefits of Turnips
From EveryNutrient.com
Turnips are a “starch” vegetable, but provide only one third the amount of calories as
an equal amount of potatoes. Turnips provide an excellent source of vitamin C, fiber,
folic acid, manganese, pantothenic acid, and copper.

How to Make Homemade Applesauce
| October 24, 2009 | Posted by admin under Recipes |
Today, I visited the Bluebird Market in Thomaston, Georgia where Farmer Bob showed up with his locally grown apples. He told us how wonderful applesauce is when made with 1/2 Rome Apples and 1/2 Granny Smith. So, I rushed home with my apples and made some applesauce. It is so EASY and healthy.
How to Make Applesauce
Ingredients:
2 Granny Smith Apples
2 Rome Apples
2 tsp sugar (optional)
dash of cinnamon (optional)
dash of salt
I leave the skins on to maintain the nutrients, but you can peel them if you like. Cut apples into small chunks (leave out core and seeds) and place in a saucepan. Add 2 tbs. of water. Cook on low until soft and mushy (about 30 minutes). Add sugar, salt and cinnamon. Stir and serve hot or cool it down.
The benefits of making your own applesauce is there are no preservatives added and it is fresh and tasty.

Wellness includes Giving: Do Something about Poverty by Making a Loan to an Entrepreneur through Kiva
| October 15, 2009 | Posted by admin under Uncategorized |
I just made a loan to someone in Ukraine using a revolutionary new website called Kiva (www.kiva.org).
You can go to Kiva’s website and lend to someone across the globe who needs a loan for their business – like raising goats, selling vegetables at market or making bricks. Each loan has a picture of the entrepreneur, a description of their business and how they plan to use the loan so you know exactly how your money is being spent – and you get updates letting you know how the entrepreneur is going.
The best part is, when the entrepreneur pays back their loan you get your money back – and Kiva’s loans are managed by microfinance institutions on the ground who have a lot of experience doing this, so you can trust that your money is being handled responsibly.
I just made a loan to an entrepreneur named Tamara Rublyovskaya in Ukraine. They still need another $225.00 to complete their loan request of $1,150.00 (you can loan as little as $25.00!). Help me get this entrepreneur off the ground by clicking on the link below to make a loan to Tamara Rublyovskaya too:
http://www.kiva.org/app.php?page=businesses&action=about&id=142936
It’s finally easy to actually do something about poverty – using Kiva I know exactly who my money is loaned to and what they’re using it for. And most of all, I know that I’m helping them build a
sustainable business that will provide income to feed, clothe, house and educate their family long after my loan is paid back.
Join me in changing the world – one loan at a time.
Thanks!

30 Day Home Office Fitness Challenge Day 5: Low Back Stretches
| September 28, 2009 | Posted by admin under Exercise, Nutrition |
It’s 8:30 and I’ve begun my Home Office Fitness Challenge. Even though I work a corporate job, I love to write blogs and have an affiliate marketing business too. So this challenge is allowing me to do short workouts while I read and write for my blogs. So far, the challenge is fairly easy with small daily changes. Today I did the low back stretches which I really needed because my low back and hips are hurting after my 2 mile walk yesterday (first time I have walked in months…and that wasn’t part of the challenge…but I needed some stress relief.)
Anyway, I also did yesterday’s neck and shoulder exercises. Now, it’s time to get ready for work. I just packed a healthy lunch with lots of convenient snacks. Amazing how much more fun it is to pack lunch when you’ve just been grocery shopping.
I am so proud of my lunch. I have packed whole almonds, dried apricots, an apple, and a pear. I made a sandwich from whole wheat honey bread I bought at the Bluebird Market Saturday. I used Hellmann’s Mayo with Olive Oil (only 5g of fat.), lean turkey, sliced cucumbers and a leaf of fresh basil from the market. Yum! I also cut up a purple bell pepper for by crunchy snack to eat with my sandwich. I’ll plan to drink 3 of my 20 oz water bottles today at work.
This weekend, I drank more water than I usually do, but still have not reached the level I need.
For someone who does not enjoy exercising, this fitness challenge is helping me to do what I know I need to do. I hope that by the end of the challenge, my aversion for exercise will be subdued. We’ll that’s 45 minutes… 10 min. exercises, 15 minutes making lunch, 10 minutes writing about it.

30 Day Home Office Fitness Challenge Day 4
| September 27, 2009 | Posted by admin under Exercise |
OK. Let’s be honest here. Sometimes life throws curve balls and the best intentions go unmet. But, I’m back! Took 2 days off from the challenge. Here’s where I am today. I’ve completed the shoulder and neck exercises, I’m sitting on my stability ball writing this, and I have just eaten fresh, organic cantelop from my local grower at the Bluebird Market. I have a glass of water beside me to drink by the end of this post.
My review: The Home Office Fitness Challenge is easy to follow so far with small changes being made each day. It’s about starting new healthy habits that will encourage fat loss and more productivity. If you fall off the program for a few days, it is easy to start back up. I encourage you to join me in the 30 Day Home Office Fitness Challenge.
Side note: My cat got his teeth into my foam covered dumbbells. Found the evidence this morning.
30 Day Home Office Fitness Challenge Day 3
| September 25, 2009 | Posted by admin under Exercise, Nutrition |

I’m participating in the 30 Day Home Office Fitness Challenge and am now on Day 3. Today’s fitness challenge is about eating healthier so I can have more energy and be more productive in my work day. Scott recommends making healthy snacks convenient. Keeping some almonds and fruit on the desk with a bottle of water makes it more convenient than junk food.
I keep a bottled water on my desk (but I am not drinking enough as I can see on today’s video), but today I will put an apple on my desk. I like this idea, but I’ll need to get to the grocery store soon to get some more healthy snacks.
You can be healthier and more productive at work, too. It only takes 10-15 minutes a day and it’s free.
