How much Vitamin D should you be getting?

This seems to be the year of Vitamin D. Everyone is talking about it. New studies being published and reviewed every day. For the next few weeks, I am going to be posting about vitamin D and helping you navigate through this new territory.

Today I want to refer you to an article by in the New York Times called, “What do you lack? Probably Vitamin D.”

The article discusses how we get vitamin d naturally and the recommendations for supplement use. It also shares the common diseases that may be related to vitamin d deficiency.

Gwyneth Paltrow, age 37, admits she may have Osteopenia (the precursor to Osteoporosis.) Speculations are that her “crazy diets” and excessive exercise programs may be the culprit. Doctors said her vitamin D levels were some of the lowest seen and may be due to her low intake of dairy products.

Children today are not spending the time outdoors playing like they used to due to video games, computers, and safety concerns. Not only this, when we do take them outside, we make sure they are covered in sunscreen. The result is that many of our children are lacking the “sunshine vitamin”, vitamin D. Two recent studies have been published that should cause us concern and move us into action.

Vitamin D deficiency is now linked to high blood pressure and high cholesterol in our young children. Both of these are risk factors for heart disease later in life.

The new research suggests it may be beneficial to supplement with multivitamins containing vitamin D and having your child get 15 minutes of sunshine without sunscreen daily.

According to a post at CNNHealth.com

A whopping 70 percent of American kids aren’t getting enough vitamin D, and such youngsters tend to have higher blood pressure and lower levels of good cholesterol than their peers, according to two new studies published this week in the journal Pediatrics. Low vitamin D levels also may increase a child’s risk of developing heart disease later in life, experts say.
